January 24, 2017, 1:00 pm in the library. In A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Charles Dickens, the book club’s December choice, Scrooge indicated that the workhouses could take care of the poor so why should he bother to help them. Jennifer Worth’s memoirs of her career as a midwife in this poverty stricken area that still bore the scars of war, describe the amazing resilience of this close knit community. Her autobiographical works provided the background for the popular PBS show, CALL THE MIDWIFE. Although there are three titles in the series, we will focus on the second, SHADOWS OF THE WORKHOUSE, learning that this degrading institution continued well into the twentieth century.
