The fourth of July celebrations remind Father Chuck of the greatest gift that we have as Americans and as Christians. Freedom. Liberty. Free choice.
God gave us the freedom to not listen to wisdom, to say no to him, and to cause ourselves infinite pain and suffering. In the old tribal days, there were books and books full of rules and laws, and God's wrath was the enforcer. Jesus abolished all of that. Everything changed when he said simply "Love your God, love your neighbor as yourself, then do what you will." This is the greatest gift: freedom to choose (and freedom to suffer the consequences).
So with freedom comes great responsibility. We have to decide, over and over, every minute of every day whether to say yes or no to God. Whether to help or to harm ourselves.
